About the Old Chigwellians
Welcome
The OC Club has approximately 1500 members and has its base at the Club House, Roding Lane, Chigwell very near to the school. It is a sporting and social club with of course close ties to the school. It has several ‘associate’ members (i.e. non-Old Chigwellian) who are recommended and sponsored by existing OC members.
The Development Committee
With the School's active encouragement and approval the Club has formed a development committee, the mandate of which is to widen and expand services to its members and to all OC's. The committee is comprised of representatives, both male and female, from the School and OC Club. The main focus will be to arrange suitable social events such as university dinners, golf days, ladies days, reunions and a special annual event.
The Club and School will promote the sale of memorabilia both at the Club and the school shop and we are planning to produce shortly a list of items available. Through the website and otherwise, we aim to provide the school with details of those OC's ready to give for example careers advice or work experience opportunities to pupils of the school both past and present.
Sports Teams
The Club runs five football teams (in the Arthurian league) and has a very strong reputation with its record of success as both League Champions and Arthur Dunn Cup Winners. The tennis section is also strong, playing in local leagues and has an excellent social background running in-house tournaments and Club nights (Tuesdays and Saturdays). The three all weather tennis courts have been recently resurfaced. The squash section is also active in local leagues and in-house tournaments. There is a junior football section run by a school parent and a junior tennis section is, we hope, to be developed soon. Ladies’ netball is just about to get started and the Club is projecting a number of ideas to develop other sporting activities for OC girls and other lady members.
Running of the club
The club is run by a committee consisting of various volunteer members (and the school Head Pupil) – the sporting sections are run by their own sub-committees.
The Social Side and hiring the club for social functions
The Club also has a strong social side including Quiz Nights, various Club dinners, Wednesday lunches, school social events, OC Sundays and many others. The Club is available for hire for social functions, including birthday and anniversary parties, and full catering is provided (also discos if required). The charge is £75 for members and £150 for non-members. All enquiries to Club Steward Steve Amos (see below). The Club’s magazine, the Mitre, is published twice a year and sent to all members.
Joining the club
To join the Club the annual subscription is currently £35 per annum or there is a life subscription available. To join the sporting sections a further subscription is payable and all information on membership can be obtained from the Membership Secretary (see below). Membership forms can also be obtained at the Club. Associate Members need to be sponsored by two existing members. Recommendations for the Club’s principal officers on 22 May 2003 are:
